In Our Memory Forever

“Sixty-two years ago today, my Dad took me to the hospital to see my new baby brother. I was eight and a half and I remember playing with his fingers when he came into this world. Now as he lies dying, I play with his fingers hoping, somehow, he will remember too.”

These are the words of my husband on December 14, 2009 as we were sending his brother on his journey to forever. They broke my heart, but, at the same time, it was SO touching and beautiful!

Later, on our way home, I remarked about how many times he told his brother he loved him over the course of the last several weeks. He said he ALWAYS told him he loved him every time he saw or spoke to him on the phone. Thinking back, I knew he was right. I knew that he and his brother were close from the beginning. They always used to joke that Ron would tag along EVERYWHERE…sometimes even on dates. Hubby always said that he was sure Ron would be there with him on his honeymoon. The ironic thing was, though Ron was NOT with him, hubby DID tag along on Ron’s honeymoon. It wasn’t intentional; Ron’s wife came down with measles. They were married in Las Vegas so, while she was sick in bed, Ron and hubby gambled all night long.

Also, on the way home, I said that people did not say “I love you” as often as they should. We have an extremely loving family and extended family. We often say “I love you”. It’s strange that hubby and I don’t say it to each other often…I guess we feel it’s a given…I intend to change that! I said to him “There were many times I was displeased with the things you said or did, but I NEVER stopped loving you! And I will always love you!” We had a long, cherished conversation on the way home.

Today, December 19, 2009, we laid Ron to rest next to his Grandmother, Grandfather, Mother, and Dad in the cemetery next to the church his Great-Great-Grandfather established. Nearly all persons buried in the cemetery are related in one way or another. It is very comforting to know that Ron will spend eternity with so many loving family members.

Thank you all, so very much, for the wonderful letters and emails of condolence you have sent. The weeks through which we traveled on so many of your thoughts and prayers were comforting to us. We feel so blessed to have such fantastic friends and family! We love you!

God Bless You All!
Until Next Time!
