Summertime: Frightfully Fun!

Summertime is near and the grandkids are anxiously awaiting for the opening of our state’s two biggest amusement parks, Cedar Point and King’s Island. Cedar Point is in Sandusky, Ohio while King’s Island is located just northeast of Cincinnati. We live in between the two. The grandkids favor Cedar Point and have been asking when we are going since Christmas!

As a young girl, our family went to Cedar Point at least once a year. In the 40’s and 50’s, the best way to get to the amusement park was by ferry since it was a peninsula extending into Sandusky Bay and Lake Erie and the only way to get to the end was by a very narrow road that became crowded quickly.

I remember eating Coffelt’s Fudge which is still located at the park, but has become better known for it’s salt water taffy and the legendary Momma Bernardi’s Home Made French Fries. French Fries similar to Momma Bernardi’s are sold in the existing restaurants in Cedar Point.

I was never excited about roller coasters, but I do remember the Cyclone roller coaster. Being very young I loved the carousel. It was huge and the original one still remains in working condition!

A little background: By the end of the second World War, Cedar Point was in a strong need of financial help. The wood of the Cyclone coaster was rotting away, the boardwalk was cracked in many, many places, and the fishing dock was in need of repair. Things started to turn around for Cedar Point in 1945. In 1946, Cedar Point’s oldest-still existing ride, the Midway Carousel, was installed. By 1951, the Cyclone coaster was razed because it’s poor condition. The resort then didn’t have a single roller coaster after the Cyclone disappeared. While the Cyclone was departing, the Laff-in-the-Dark, Rocket Ships, and Loop-A-Plane were newcomers. Cedar Point Causeway, built in 1957, is still used many times a day. The then current president of Cedar Point, Bernie Zeiher was replaced by George Roose around 1958, and Emile Legros was elected chairman that same year. Berni’s Penny Arcade was removed in 1959 to make way for construction. Back in the 1950s, the Pagoda Gift Shop was a post-office. The Crystal Rock Castle was turned into a maintenance shop in the late-1950s. In 1959, the hotels received a needed fresh coat of paint, concrete had been poured for the new admission gates, and over $1,200,000 had been spent to refresh Cedar Point. Cedar Point’s first roller coaster since the Cyclone had been built. It was called the Wild Mouse. The huge resort also got a new kind of ride, a monorail. It was the most ridden ride in 1959. The original Breakers Hotel was restored to its natural beauty.

Now, looking back, the Cyclone, which looked very frightening to me at the time, seems tame compared to some of the coasters being built now. Cedar Point still has the classic “old time” roller coaster called the Blue Streak.

The Blue Streak

The newest coaster at Cedar Point is the most terrifying ride I’ve ever seen and I surely hope the grandkids don’t try to talk me into getting on it! That’s absolutely NOT GONNA HAPPEN!

  23. Cindy, Bev and I have one big question… how the hell did you get those pics?

They both lived at Put-In-Bay for over 20 years and know Cedar Point very well.

It’s prompted me to give you the “Passionate Blogger Award”.

    Details are at http://sharithomas.com/passionate-blogger-awarded/

  24. SHARI: The pix were sent to me by my niece who never misses an opportunity to visit Cedar Point AND Kings Island! I’m not sure where she got them! I appreciate the Passionate Blogger Award and will post it whenever I get a few minutes to myself…I have SO many to post, I’m ashamed of my tardiness. Just know that I appreciate SO very much!

  27. Lovely blog!

  28. Cedar Point is about hour drive from my place and I’ve been many times. It’s fun, but there are some rides that I will not go on either. Like the newest rollercoaster on your pictures (that makes me woozy just looking at it) and the one they built a few years back.

  29. Waving from another Ohioan. Summer is definitely coming to Ohio. My oldest daughter and her friends LOVE roller coasters. They took a road trip last year to 7 roller coaster parks.

After riding the wooden roller coaster “The Beast” at King’s Island, I hurt my lower back. No more roller coasters for me. I let the family go to Cedar Point, while I sat in the hot tub and swam in the hotel pool. Ahhhhh, that was the most relaxing day I have had in a long time.

SHIRLEY: Welcome fellow Ohioan! Omigosh! SEVEN roller coaster parks. They are brave and obviously YOUNG! LOL Sorry about your back, but glad you devised a plan to enjoy yourself while your family enjoyed the scary things! Thanks for coming by.

DAWN: I love amusement parks…roller coasters? not so much! Wicked is a good description of this one! Glad you like my blog and you’re more than welcome to return any time you’re in the neighborhood!

    Judys last blog post..Happy Easter!

  39. When I last attended Cedar Point, the newest coaster was called The Dragon or something to that effect. I thought that one was pretty terrifying. The Blue Streak was fast and fun, and I liked it a whole lot better than the Dragon. It was perhaps my favorite ride except for that nice slow paddlewheeler they had running around in the pond.

This new one that you have pictures of looks more like a heart attack maker than a roller coaster. That thing is straight up and straight down! Way too much ride for me.

lol. I must be getting old. I don’t think I could even watch.
