Paid Ads Without Blogger's Consent?

366

OMG…If I see this ad one more time,
I’m going to scream! So far today, I have dropped 157 EC’s…I started counting this particular paid ad and in 157 drops, this ad has appeared in 43 of them!

That’s not the worst of it. I have opted out of the paid ads. I canceled the paid ads that I had accepted and reject any news that I get (and they keep coming). However, when I logged on to my blog this afternoon, I noticed this ad which I did not recognize as being a usual EC ad. I went to my dashboard and that’s NOT that ad that should have been showing. Lo and behold, there it sat under the paid EC’s waiting to be accepted or rejected. It had NOT been accepted but there it was on my blog!

I immediately wrote to Entrecard complaining about the practice of paid ads being allowed time on my blog when they hadn’t been accepted by the owner of the blog. I, of course, have not received a reply nor do I really expect one.

I don’t want to see this ugly ad on my site nor anyone else’s. Not to say that, if you have accepted the ad, that it should not run. I just cannot understand how it can be on SO MANY blogs at one time. Surely, it must be a mistake.

YIKES!!! I just went back to my site and there is ANOTHER paid ad running…it also was still in my approve/reject column! I rejected it and it’s STILL running! When the ads are cancelled, my EC widget is then blank. One can still click on it, but the advertiser who paid me with hard-earned EC’s is NOT getting the benefit of the time he paid for. This is making me extremely angry!

I hope Entrecard can come up with a viable reason for it! They better come up with something quick! I’m concerned that I am paying the price for opting out. I hope that isn’t the case.

Just sayin’

Until next time!

  1. I’m glad it wasn’t just me this was happening too!! I was so mad when I saw a paid ad that I did NOT approve running on my blog. I think this may be the last straw for Entrecard if they cannot fix it so that ads that have not even been approved are not running. I can’t wait to hear what they have to say to you about this.

  2. Hi there Theresa…I am SO angry…I really don’t expect to hear from Entrecard. I think they are overlooking problems and concentrating on the paid ads. In the event that I DO hear from them, I will post about it. Thanks for stopping in!

  3. although i see this ad waiting in my queue to be rejected or accepted, I see it appearing on my blog! I wonder if this happening to those that are rejecting it too. What is happening to entrecard?

I just did a refresh and the teeth ad went away, now back to the regular ads.

  4. I’ve been blogging about the issues at Entrecard for some time now. Don’t expect to hear from anyone as I believe Graham has left the building. Andy’s having personal issues and has set Entrecard aside, too.

If you’re lucky, you might hear from Matt. Not sure what he can do, though.

The only reason there’s even an Entrecard widget on my blog is because I’m doing some testing. There should never be a paid ad showing on this blog, either.

I’ll be gone from there shortly… like I said, just testing stuff.

  5. Hi Shari…I’m relatively new to Entrecard (a little less than 8 months). I have NEVER written to Entrecard (good or bad) where I have received a reply. I get an acknowledgment that they’ve received the message…that’s it! I am just so frustrated. I have found ALL of my favorite sites through entrecard and don’t know what I’ll do without it. Thanks for sharing.

  6. I’m sick of seeing those teeth too.

If you want to keep the unapproved ads from showing on your widget, go to your Entrecard dashboard, scroll down to Your account and click on Advert settings. Make sure you have a check next to “Allow paid ads only if explicitly approved by you”
otherwise those ads that are waiting for you to accept or reject automatically show. It’s a dirty little trick they’ve played on us.

  7. Hi Lori: Thanks for the info…I think I knew this at one time and evidently overlooked doing it! Thanks for the reminder!

  8. I hear you loud and clear! I rejected paid ads as well and one day when I went to my site, I saw an ad that I not only DID NOT approve of, but it wasn’t even in my box! After I logged on, it quickly disappeared! That shocked me and made me question the integrity of this whole campaign process.

I found a lot of my fav. blogs via entrecard…it is a shame it has come to this. :(

  9. I’m also annoyed by the teeth ad. I dropped about 50 cards today and I saw it at least 15 times.
I don’t mind approving paid ads (although it’s not fair to non-paying advertisers) but this is just too much. There should be some kind of limit…
I guess the only way is to reject it on your site and try to avoid it when dropping… but how?

  10. Lori is right. Before that I did not check on the option “Allow paid ads only if explicitly approved by you” and I have paid ads sneaking in every now and then even without my approval. But once I checked that option, it has not bothered me (touch wood) again.

  11. Unfortunately there have been many reports regarding paid ads running on blogs when they were not approved. There have also been reports of paid ads running on blogs even though the settings were set to not allow them. You could try going to “not accepting” ads which puts you at the bottom of your category but you can still surf and earn credits. The main problem is EC controls the widget so can override any settings a member make. Graham is desperate for money right now so I’m just saying he could easily override your settings so paid ads run when you are least likely to see them. The only sure fire way to ensure a paid or offensive ad does not run on your blog is to remove the widget.

  12. I saw that ad so much too….every time I saw I got frustrated and closed that blog. I don’t mind the paid ads that are actually blogs, but when they are ads like that and they are that UGLY, it irritates me.

I’d be mad too if I had denied that ad or ALL ads and they were appearing.

  13. OMG!
That thing mysteriously showed up on my widget!
    WTH!?

  14. I am so happy that you said something. I had been thinking about saying something about this. I am so sick of seeing those teeth on people’s blogs. As soon as I saw the ad I knew I was not going to run it. Who wants to see that let alone over and over. I looked at the site like I always do before I accept any ad and I was even more put off. I do not like that the site changes where it claims to be according to where your IP address shows you as living. Then I checked the comments. All of them are made up lies by the person who’s site it is. When have you seen that many comments and not one of them have a blog or site url? Obviously they were fake. There is no way I would run that ad.

*Oh yeah, I gave you a award on my blog.

  15. Hi Judy-

Not only do I not like the ugly ads (which are incompatible with a professional blog) but I’m concerned that the time I’m spending dropping EntreCards is being diluted. I’m getting about half as much traffic from Entrecarders as I did about a month ago. Not sure if that’s because I’m “wasting my time” dropping on paid ads or because so many people have already left the network. Would love to hear your thoughts.

  16. I agree – that ad is vile. I’m gettin gno traffic from my entrecard ads anymore anyway. I don’t know why I bother.

  17. Good post. Unfortunately, I think all of us that have decided not to accept paid ads (which is the majority, from what I can tell) ARE paying a price. My ad price has bottomed out. Ads I have not accepted are showing up under the column of ads waiting to be shown. Things I’ve never approved – or even seen before – are showing up on my widget.

I’m also highly annoyed by all this. I think most ECers are. I don’t konw the solution – especially when EC won’t respond to any of our complaints. I just wanted you to know you aren’t alone…and if your ad price bottoms out like mine did, I will support you. I think that’s all we can do at this point, is support each other. It doesn’t look like the powers that be over at EC are doing – or going to do – much supporting of us. I donn’t know what changed…but EC is so not the program I signed up for!

Hang in there – and let me know if I can do anything to help out. xx

  18. I’m in agreement with everyone above. And if this keeps up I will be dropping from the Entrecard program. I dislike liars and I feel that is what they are doing to us.

  19. Hi Everyone…I want to thank each and every one for your input on this very frustrating event. Unfortunately, I have heard more negative reports than positive ones. I DO love Entrecard and the sites it leads me to. I am going to “tough it out” as my grandson says, and continue as long as there are good people like you that I can visit. Thank you all for your comments!

  20. Ohhh just wait til you do your drops for today…seen the CashSherpa.com ad yet?? Just like the tooth one from yesterday that you loved so much. Yikes! ;)

  21. OMG, I couldn’t agree more, if I see those teeth one more time I’m going to bash them in!! I only take paid ads relating to my blog, I switched it on my settings to only allow ads that relate to my blog and so far I’ve only got one paid ad in about a week. So far doing it that way has been working out for me — before that my inbox was loaded with ads not related to my blog, which I don’t want.

  22. This is really unacceptable! As author of your own blog, you should certainly have the right to approve or disapprove an ad. I am not interested in paid ads, and I am accepting the free ads only right now. In the beginning I accepted a handful of paid ads but only from blogs that I was familiar with or ones that were craft/ mom oriented. It is a shame that Entrecard has changed so quickly!

  23. KATHERINE: PLEASE…I do NOT need any more aggravation! I’ve already dealt with “Live from Waterloo” about 40 times. Thanks for the comment!

NANJODOGZ: I finally regulated the ads to “Accept no ads without owner approval”…seems to be working…(so far). I am getting so paranoid that after 10 or so drops, I rush back to my blog to make sure nothing has slipped in…LOL

SUSAN: Unacceptable is NOT the word…and I’m not sure what the word would be and perhaps it could not be printed here (smile). I haven’t had any trouble since I wrote the post…maybe that helped! I think there have been a lot of posts written on the subject.

  24. Hi Lori: I did do that and have not had any trouble since…(we shall see)! Thanks for dropping in.

  25. Hi there msod, I cannot answer your question…but it doesn’t look promising for entrecard. It’s sad because I really enjoy it! Thanks for your comment!

  26. I’ve not been accepting any paid ads either, seems the number doing that has grown; but still we still ugly ads that no one wants. Good Luck hope you hear something soon. Though from the blogs I’ve seen comments on…don’t hold your breath. Guess the people in the forum (I’m still not there under 400 ads), might be happy…don’t know but seems lots of folks really arent

  27. I have to agree with you that this teeth whitening ad is starting to get on my nerve.

Unfortunately I am starting to see this ad at other part of the website that is not Entrecard related. My suspicion is someone affiliate program is allowing members to generate the exact same page just with different affiliate numbers.

  28. SANDY: Hi there…I was extremely disenchanted with the whole business. Hope Entrecard gets the “kinks” worked out soon!

PLIN: Hate those teeth! Don’t see as many of them now, but they are still popping up every now and again. I don’t know where the problem lies but there definitely is one!

  29. Yep, Judy that was the last straw for me. I saw those paid ads and freaked out. For me? There was a different paid add per page – everytime I refreshed. And, as you said, they were just sitting there in the to be approved section.

If you read the rules, Entrecard says that they can do that or will do it. Now.

It’s scary to not be on Entrecard, but I feel better for it.

  30. I thought I will tell you what I did and I haven’t received many paid adds. the ones I receive i reject right away.
I went to the dashboard open Advert Settings. Checked #1, #3,#4, #5. saved it. now it works fine. hope that works for you.

  31. I had been with them since the beginning and found many great blogs. But there are plenty of other advertising options, and lots of great forums and ning sites to join to discover other bloggers.

  32. Hey Claudia…good to see you my friend. I’m not scared…yet…I just wish they hadn’t changed it. BTW…Almost finished with The Fey! Fantastic book!

Hi Auntie E. I have done that and it has seemed to help. I still get a few paid ads wanting to be accepted or rejected, but since the “teeth” none have gone through. I reject them all!

  33. Hi Cindi…thanks for your input. I think I will soon have to explore some other options as well.
