What I Call My "Angel Happenings"

I can’t explain three events that have happened in my life over the past 2 years. Let me preface the telling of these events by stating that I am not a devoutly religious person, but I am a Christian and try to live my life accordingly. I go to church on a semi-regular basis. Truth is, I come up with excuses, some good, some bad, about why I can’t get up on Sunday morning for church. I’m working on that. I don’t know if the events have any religious connotations or are just really strange. But let me get on with the stories.

Event #1 – My mother passed away on November 20, 2006. She was 101 and lived the last four years of her life in our home. I loved having her but, since she was an invalid, it was a lot of work since I was her soul caregiver. We had a good time up until the last 2 weeks of her life and she just “gave up”. Mom was a wonderful person and a grand lady. I call her “Mom” because, even though I was adopted at the age of 5 1/2, she was my Mom in the true sense of the word. Mom was not afraid of the dark, but since her eyesight was failing rapidly, she insisted on having a night light on in the room. Regular nightlights did not give off enough light for her so I found a small lamp that was lit by simply touching it. It had 3 levels of brightness and Mom liked it on the brightest level which was 25 watts. You had to touch the lamp 3 times to get it to that bright level. Mom was adamant about having it so bright and would constantly remind me to turn on and “hit it 3 times, please”. And I did.  After Mom’s passing, I brought the lamp to my room, but never turned it on. It was just that it was one of her favorite things and I wanted to keep it with me. BUT…about 3 times a week, I would wake up out of a sound sleep and the lamp would be on! It was across the room on my dresser and no one had touched it. The morning I mentioned it to my husband, we had a thunderstorm during the night and he blamed it on the thunder perhaps jarring the dresser enough that the lamp lit. It would have had to have jarred three times! This continued to happen for about 10 months. At that time, we moved to a one floor house since I was unable to continue climbing stairs. Again, the lamp went into my room. I thought perhaps Mom would have stayed at our old home, but on the very first night in the new house, I awoke to a brightly lit lamp! As I stared at it, and said under my breath, “Mom, is that you again?”, the light slowly faded and eventually went out. I got up to see if the bulb had burned out even though I knew they don’t usually just fade away, but the lamp came on at first touch…and got brighter with each additional touch. It has never come on by itself since.

Event #2 – It was a bad year for us as my dear mother-in-law passed away on September 13, 2007. She, too, was a sweet lady and we had lots of fun together. She and her husband had moved to Florida and we saw them at least twice a year. We’d go to Florida in the winter and they’d come up to Ohio for about a month in the summer. We always had a grand time. They were planning to board a plane and come to our house late in 2007 because they wanted to watch their great-grandson play football. They were to arrive on September 14, 2007, the day after she passed away. Her death was sudden and we were all in shock. Her funeral was held in Bowling Green, Ohio about 2 hours from us. Three years ago she had given me a lovely planter for my birthday. Included in the plants were a Peace Lily and a beautiful deep purple African Violet. The planter was gorgeous, but I thought to myself, “Enjoy the flowers while you have them because they won’t last”.  I tried everything but could NEVER get a Peace Lily or an African Violet to bloom again after the initial bloom had dropped off. The foliage stays nice and green and I would water regularly and feed the plants…to no avail. Three years of nice foliage, no blooms. We spent three days in Bowling Green and when we returned home, I noticed, as we pulled into the driveway, a tall white flower blooming from the planter in the window. I squealed and said, “Look the Peace Lily is blooming!” This, of course, went right over hubby’s head…hadn’t a clue why this should be such a momentous occasion. I ran into the house and, yes, you guessed it; FOUR deep purple blossoms on my African Violet as well. Both have bloomed regularly ever since.

Event #3 – This happened on Monday of this week. I was traveling to a local nursery to buy some bulbs to plant now for next Spring. I was at a large intersection – 4 lanes each direction. I had the red light and was in the curb lane and a lady was also waiting to my left. The left turn light changed to green, and the traffic in both directions proceeded to turn. We still had the red light and were still waiting for it to turn green. It was a long light since the traffic was heavy. The left turn light finally turned red and the through traffic light turned green. I stepped on the accelerator and nothing…absolutely nothing. My car had stalled! I turned the key in the ignition…nothing. I glanced over to my left because that car hadn’t moved either and that lady was doing the same thing I was. I couldn’t figure out why this was happening. All of a sudden, a car SPED…I KNOW it had to be doing at least 100 mph through the red light from the cross traffic. About 3 seconds later a police car, going SOMEWHAT slower than that, raced through the light after him. I gasped and proceeded to try to start the car again. It started right up and so did the car next to me. We both glanced at each other with a look that said, “What just happened here?”. I drove across the intersection and pulled into the first parking lot I came to because I was shaking so badly. The woman who had been next to me pulled in right behind me. We both got out of our cars and stood and stared at each other for a second and then she came over and put her arms around me and we both started to cry. We shared a prayer of thanks that “Someone” had been watching over us.

Again, I can’t explain any of these events. God? Angels? Or just plain unexplained circumstances? I just needed to get this off my chest and out in the open; thank you for listening and I sure would like to hear whether or not you might have some insight as to what might have brought about these happenings so I don’t go on thinking that I’m completely losing it.

Until next time!

  1. Hi Judy,
We will need to have some serious chats some time. I had some things occur also after each of my parents deaths.

I think it is their way of never really leaving us, but letting us know they are at peace!

  5. Nice post. The other night we were taking the two-year-old for a late night ride so she would fall asleep like we do at least once a week. The intersection that we turn onto our road is pretty dangerous. Really no reason why it should be other than people just don’t slow down to stop when they should. Anyway, we were approaching it when there was a deer in the road. We slowed down for the deer who stood there for a few seconds. The deer looked at me and I immediately thought of my mother-in-law who died in 2006. Something about the deer’s eyes just seemed human. Then at that intersection we noticed a speeding car just blew through the stop sign. Had it not been for the deer, we would have been right in his way. My husband immediately thanked God because I do believe that someone was looking out for us.

  6. Great post!
We all have little “touches” in our lives. We don’t take enough time to be quiet and pay attention. I am so grateful for the ones in my life. When I think of some of them, they still give me chills on the back of my neck…but, “good chills”.

  7. To say that blog entry was touching would be an understatement. Thank you for sharing such personal experiences. No doubt there are angels watching over you..

  9. Whenever my husband talks about his father passing, he would also tell stories about how both he and his mom felt his dad’s presence for about a month after his passing. ‘it’s almost like my dad want to make sure the family was ok.’ I am not a religious person myself, but I think there are some thing that just cannot be explained. Thank you for sharing your stories.

  10. Thank you for all your comments. It is comforting to know that I am not alone in my “angel happenings”. I have to laugh at the light episode with my Mom. I think she was still trying to tell me that she wanted that light on!!! When I kept turning it off, I guess she just said “Oh well, she never did listen to me”. She was a funny lady and I enjoyed every minute of our lives together. Thank you, too, for sharing some of your experiences.

  13. Amazing post! I believe that there are angels and spirits around us of those who have passed. My husbands son died tradgically at the age of 7, fourteen years ago, and we have had many, many strange , childlike things happen in our home over the years, that we cannot explain.

  15. What a touching post. The last story actually gave me goosebumps. The only similar situation I can think of was several years back. I was driving down the interstate in my own little world, it was just me and the big trucks and I wasn’t paying all that much attention. A truck behind me let out a long honk which totally woke me up and I have no idea why he did it. I was still on high attention a few miles down the road when a different truck came right into my lane. If I hadn’t been alert I would have been dead.

  16. Hi Susan, Babbette and Lenox Knits…thank you so much for your comments. I do feel that there are angels all around us and sometimes it is comforting to know…and other times some things just seem to cry for an explanation. Glad most of you have had similar experiences. Hope to see you back often!

  17. I am sure that those two dear ladies were watching over you..that was a lovely post, thank you.

  18. Thank you Lidian, I like to think that myself! Thanks for stopping in and commenting. Hope to see you back soon.

  19. I am a devout Christian, and I think you are having what some call “Godwinks.” That’s when God looks down and “winks” by doing something out of the ordinary for us to help us, either by
divine intervention or by using angels. Either way, it’s God’s way of letting us know He cares. I think you and some others here have experienced this. I have several times, from small things to larger things. It’s great knowing how much He cares, huh?

  20. Thank you for your comment Pamela. I had not heard that expression before. Yes, it’s comforting to know how much He really does care. It seems that many people have experienced similar events. Hope you drop in from time to time and, thanks again!

  21. There is a song by Amy Grant – angels are around me watching every day …a reckless car ran out of gas before it came my way … and I have seen such angel happenings too.
Amazing about the flowers blooming too.
I have not heard of Godwinks though – wonderful saying.

  22. Thanks Trish for bringing Amy Grant’s song back to mind. I have heard it before and evidently forgotten it. I will have to look in my CD’s to see if I can find it again. The flowers are still blooming…I am so happy! Hope to see you back often.

  23. Hey Judy!

Thanks for sharing the great stories.

As you may know, I’m a Christian and therefore it is my intent to have every part of my life guided by the Bible, every word of which I believe.

There is certainly no doubt in my mind that angels are all around us. In fact, you may have read in Hebrews 13:2 “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.”

Isn’t it amazing to think that God so orchestrates the lives of those who love Him that He can actually send an angel to shut down your car just long enough to keep you from harm?

And what’s more, the idea that you both experienced the same thing at the same time? What a confirmation that God was intervening on behalf of both of you!

Almost makes you want to get up and go to church! :)

Nice job with your blog and your Alexa Rating.

  24. Yes Brad, indeed it did. Was a “voice” got me right up this morning and off to church I went. Would you believe, the sermon was about angels?!?! Was certainly a wake-up call I needed! Thanks for your insight and your visit!

  25. Thank you so much for sharing. It touched my heart deeply and one I will remember for a long time. I know He loves us deeply and to see it in our lives is a blessing indeed!

I needed to be reminded of his love because I have been going through some tough patches lately. I will start paying closer attention because he does use them for good. Thanks!

  26. Thanks, Suzanne, for your comment. Yes, I have been blessed in many ways and sometimes lose sight of my blessings from time to time. If one just stops and looks, one will see Him everywhere. Hope things are heading in a brighter direction for you. God Bless

    coincidences either.

  29. Thanks for visiting me and it’s so good to know that Resches is still there. When I come home for a visit I’ll have to stop there and my favorite pizza place Donatos.

I think someone is looking out for you. I have had similar experiences since my husband died in 2003. I agree that sometimes we are too busy to recognize the little things that happen that causes us to shake our head, but don’t think too deeply about.
